According to the Twitter account of Omar Hammami (aka Abu Mansour al-Amriki) the American jihadist has survived an attempted assassination today (26 April 2013).
Offering proof of this attempt on his life Hammami also released pictures of his wounds which can be viewed below. While it is not surprising that al-Shabaab would seek to have Hammami killed this attempt, if confirmed, may demonstrate that the internal power struggles and disputes within al-Shabaab may be heading towards a very open and bloody showdown. Although such an open civil war within the Somali Islamist group is likely to be welcomed by many of its opponents it should be noted that even if Sheikh Abu Zubair (Godane) is overthrown (violently or non-violently) his replacement is likely to remain just as committed to continuing the groups violent campaign to impose its rule and interpretation of Islamic law throughout Somalia.
