Video "The Hayo Raid" from al-Kataib Media Foundation

The al-Kataib Media Foundation has released a new video entitled "The Hayo Raid" (Arabic: إِغَارة حَيّو).

This video runs for a total length of 14 minutes 38 seconds and shows al-Shabaab attacking soldiers of the Kenya Defence, Somali Transitional Federal Government and RasKamboni militia in the town of Hayo located near Afmadow in the Lower Jubba region on 02 December 2011. The video shows vehicles and weapons said to have been captured by al-Shabaab in this battle as well as casualties suffered by both sides - al-Shabaab of course claiming their casualties as martyrs. An interview by Amiirnuur reportedly on the scene can be read here (Somali).

This video, said to depict a significant al-Shabaab victory, comes at a time when the Islamist group us coming under increasing military and financial pressure. This reminder of what the group considers to be a mjor military success is probably an effort to bolster the morale of its international supporters in the face of recent defeats or forced retreats from major bases in Mogadishu, Afgoye, Afmadow, Marka and other locations.
